When a baby is born, it demands constantly. Over the years, as it grows, it learns to shift from demanding to giving and receiving. In our relationships with other people, like babies, sometimes we think: You're supposed to make me happy. You're the one who needs to change. Give me, give me, give me. But life is about a different kind of orientation. We are meant to move from getting and acquiring and achieving - to serving. For this we came into the world, to bear witness to something much greater than what we can get. Once we discover our true purpose, we realize that the gift we receive is so much greater than what we tried to hoard for ourselves in the past. Then everything opens up, including our relationships.
