There is an ancient Hindu story about a man who had a prize thoroughbred. The entire village said, "You are so lucky and that horse is such a good thing." To which he replied, "Perhaps". The horse ran away and all the villagers said, "Oh, that is terrible", to which he replied, "Perhaps". His only son went looking for the horse, found it and brought it home. Once again the villagers said, "Oh what a stroke of luck. That is such good news", again his reply was, "Perhaps". The very next day, his son fell from the horse and broke his leg. "What terrible news" was the villager's assessment. Again his reply, "Perhaps". Two weeks later the King of the land sent out a decree of war. All the young men in the village were drafted to defend the throne. When the soldiers came to the wise man's only son and found his leg broken, he was not drafted. Once again the villagers said, "Oh you are so fortunate to have something like this occur", to which the man replied, "Perhaps".
